NEW YORK, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- A person of interest in the U.S. Brown University mass shooting has been detained, officials said on Sunday.
The individual is in their 30s, with more information to be shared at a later date once verified, according to Oscar Perez, the chief of the Providence Police Department.
Of the nine people injured in the shooting, seven are in stable condition, one is in critical condition, and another one was discharged, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley told a press conference.
The shelter-in-place order for the university and the surrounding areas has been lifted, said the mayor.
At least two people were killed Saturday afternoon in a mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, the U.S. state of Rhode Island.
Authorities said earlier that the suspected shooter is a male dressed in black.
Gun violence has been a severe problem for U.S. society for decades. In 2025, the country has seen 389 mass shootings, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,100 children and teenagers under the age of 17, both on and off campus, according to the Gun Violence Archive. ■
