VILNIUS, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said Wednesday that Lithuania stands in solidarity with Denmark on the issue of Greenland and is ready to contribute to the efforts of Denmark and other NATO allies to strengthen security in the Arctic region.

In a presidential office statement issued following his meeting with King Frederik X of Denmark here, Nauseda noted that "territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law that cannot be questioned. The future of the people of Greenland and Denmark depends solely on them."

Greenland, the world's largest island, is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining control over defense and foreign policy. Since returning to office in 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to "obtain" Greenland, a move that has been repeatedly rejected by Europe.

Meanwhile, Nauseda expressed his appreciation for Danish "significant contribution to Lithuania's accession to the EU and NATO and to attracting substantial investment to Lithuania."

"The Danish Armed Forces provided multifaceted support in building the Lithuanian Armed Forces and was Lithuania's first partner in international operations," he added.

Emphasizing that a strong partnership between the Nordic and Baltic states is the foundation of regional security, the president said that Lithuania and Denmark are like-minded countries that share a similar view of today's geopolitical challenges and they will cooperate closely to support Ukraine.
