LONDON, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Britain's gross domestic product (GDP) posted a 0.6-percent growth in the first quarter of 2024, showed the data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Friday.

After two quarters of contraction, the country's economy returned to positive growth in the first three months, said ONS Director of Economic Statistics Liz McKeown.

In output terms, services grew by 0.7 percent and the production sector by 0.8 percent, while the construction sector fell by 0.9 percent.

"There was broad-based strength across the service industries with retail, public transport and haulage, and health all performing well. Car manufacturers also had a good quarter. These were only a little offset by another weak quarter for construction," said McKeown.

Monthly speaking, the GDP grew 0.4 percent in March, 0.2 percent in February, and 0.3 percent in January, according to the ONS data.

"In the month of March the economy grew robustly led, again, by services with wholesalers, the health sector and hospitality all doing well," McKeown added.
