BUCHAREST, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Romanian Senate President Florin Citu announced Wednesday that he resigned from his post at the request of the leadership of the National Liberal Party (PNL) to which he belongs.

"I made this decision personally, so as not to create problems for the National Liberal Party," Citu told local media, adding that "the party chairman and general secretary demanded my resignation," and he was told that the party had decided to withdraw its political support for him.

PNL Chairman and Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca announced that the party decided to put Vice President Alina Gorghiu on the acting leadership of the Upper Chamber of Parliament.

Citu lost all his senior positions, from the prime minister, PNL president, PNL local president in Sector 3 of Bucharest and the president of the Senate, in less than a year.
