ISLAMABAD, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani security forces killed five militants on Saturday during an intelligence-based operation in the country's northwest North Waziristan district, while an army officer was killed in an exchange of fire, the military said.

The operation was carried out in North Waziristan district following intelligence reports about the presence of militants, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military's media wing, said in a statement.

The ISPR said security forces engaged the militants, killing five of them during the operation. Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants, who were allegedly involved in attacks against security forces, law enforcement agencies and civilians, the statement added.

Pakistan's security forces have continued intelligence-based operations in recent months as part of ongoing efforts to counter militancy in the country's northwestern regions.
