NEW DELHI, June 2 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people, including four women, died and more than 40 were injured in two separate road accidents in India over the past 12 hours, confirmed police sources on Tuesday.
In the first mishap, three people died, one was injured and four went missing when the SUV they were travelling in fell into a 250-feet deep gorge in India's northern hilly state of Uttarakhand.
Three dead bodies had been recovered, among whom one was a woman, said a local police officer, adding that the accident occurred at around 10:00 a.m. local time.
The accident was reported from the state's Devprayag area in Tehri Garhwal district. All the victims reportedly hailed from the western state of Rajasthan and had gone there to spend summer vacations.
While the lone injured person was admitted to a local hospital, efforts were on to find those missing, said an official belonging to the state's disaster management department.
In another accident, seven people, including three women, died and nearly 40 others were injured when two buses collided head-on in Surat district of the western state of Gujarat.
The road accident occurred at around 4:00 p.m. local time. Both buses involved in the mishap belonged to the neighboring state of Maharashtra. At least five people among the injured were in a critical condition, said a senior police officer over the phone. Most of the victims were residents of Maharashtra, he added. ■
