NEW DELHI, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- India's Defence Acquisition Council on Thursday cleared proposals worth 39.7 billion U.S. dollars to buy Rafale fighter jets, combat missiles and airship-based high altitude pseudo satellite.
The aim is to enhance the capability of undertaking air dominance roles across the spectrum of conflict and boost the deterrence capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Local media reports said the proposal includes the purchase of 114 Rafale fighter jets from France. Of these, 18 aircraft will be procured off-the-shelf from France and the remaining 96 jets will be manufactured in India.
The IAF currently operates 36 Rafale aircraft.
Other procurements, including Anti-Tank Mines, overhaul of Vehicle Platforms of Armoured Recovery Vehicles, T-72 Tanks and Infantry Combat Vehicles, were also approved for the army, navy and coast guard. ■
