PHNOM PENH, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia is in the process of drafting an anti-cyber scam law, aiming at increasing the efficiency of combating technology-based scams, said a Ministry of Justice news release on Wednesday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Koeut Rith had led an inter-ministerial meeting to collect inputs for drafting a comprehensive bill, the news release said.

The meeting was attended by high-level representatives from the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Economy and Finance, National Bank of Cambodia, the government's attorney group, Ad-Hoc Committee to Combat Online Scams, National Committee for Counter Trafficking, and other law enforcement agencies.

The draft law on anti-cyber scams will serve as an important and clear legal framework to enhance the efficiency of the prevention, interception and suppression of technology-based scams, the news release said.

The legislation is being drafted in line with the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, in which Cambodia is a signatory, it added.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said in a special message last month that the fight against cyber scams was one of the government's top priorities to secure peace, security, social safety and public order.

The Southeast Asian country has launched an unprecedented nationwide crackdown on cyber scam networks in recent months, arresting and deporting thousands of online scam suspects back to their birth countries, according to the Ad-Hoc Committee to Combat Online Scams.
