Man charged after stabbing police officer in Sydney CBD

SYDNEY, May 20 (Xinhua) -- A male offender has been charged after stabbing a police officer in Sydney's central business district, authorities confirmed on Monday.

The stabbing incident unfolded at around 1:00 p.m. local time on Sunday.

When two officers conducted duties at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park Streets, a man holding a knife approached a male constable from behind and stabbed the officer in the head.

The injured constable, aged 35, was treated by paramedics for two wounds to his head.

He remains in a stable condition at St Vincent's Hospital, with scans revealing that he suffered two skull fractures.

According to the New South Wales Police Force, the 34-year-old suspect was charged with causing wounding or grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to murder.

He was refused bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Monday.

Crime scenes have been established, with investigation underway into all circumstances surrounding the incident, including the motives behind the attack.
