MANILA, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- A town police chief and his aide were killed in an ambush in Maguindanao province in the southern Philippines on Tuesday morning, police said.
Brigadier General John Guyguyon, police regional director of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, said unidentified men opened fire at the two policemen's patrol car around 10:00 a.m. local time along a road in Ampatuan town.
He said the attack occurred while the two were on their way to serve an arrest warrant to a wanted person. The two died at the scene.
Witnesses said the shooters escaped after carting away the victims' rifles and ammunition.
Guyguyon said police launched an investigation to track down the attackers. ■
