KHARTOUM, April 30 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were killed and 16 others injured Thursday in a road accident in central Sudan's Gezira State, according to Sudanese police.
The accident occurred near the Al-Hilaliya area on the road linking the towns of Abu Usher and Wad Al-Majdi, when an intercity passenger bus collided head-on with another passenger bus, the Sudanese Traffic Police said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations suggest the crash was likely caused by a technical failure, according to the statement.
Legal procedures have been launched under the supervision of relevant prosecution authorities, it said.
Sudan has long been plagued by high rates of traffic accidents due to reckless driving, overspeeding, poor road conditions, as well as unroadworthy public transport vehicles.
Major roads linking several states have also been affected by ongoing military clashes since mid-April 2023, while heavy rains in 2025 damaged parts of the country's road network. ■
