YAOUNDE, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon army said on Monday its troops have killed two fighters of the terror group Boko Haram in the country's Far North region.

The fighters were trying to steal merchandise from a truck that had a breakdown along the Kolofata-Amchide road in the region by 2 a.m. local time on Monday when elements of Cameroon's elite force Rapid Intervention Battalion on patrol opened fire and killed them, according to the army.

The incident happened almost at the same time as soldiers repelled a Boko Haram attack on the border locality of Nguetchewe in the region, local media reported.

Cameroon has deployed additional troops and ammunition to the region following a rise in attacks on civilians by the terrorists, according to security reports.

The region has been plagued by Boko Haram attacks on soldiers and civilians since 2014.
