DAR ES SALAAM, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi on Friday launched an ambitious five-year Zanzibar Water Investment Program aimed at attracting investments in the production and supply of clean and safe water.

President Mwinyi told a high-level investment conference that availability of clean and safe water is a critical ingredient in efficient execution of the government's development plans in industrial, tourism and infrastructure sectors.

He told the conference attended by local and international water experts that availability of clean and safe water is inevitable for the smooth provision of quality social services, including health and education.

The conference has come at the right time amid disastrous consequences caused by climate change whose mitigation demands concerted efforts, said Mwinyi.

"Reports indicate that many water sources in Zanzibar are drying up. Climate change has subjected us to serious shortage of water," he told the conference.
