LONDON, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has decided to renew the mandate of Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez for another four-year term, the UN maritime agency said Wednesday.
The Council recommended that the IMO Assembly approve the extension of his mandate from Jan. 1, 2028 to Dec. 31, 2031.
Dominguez took office on Jan. 1, 2024, and his current term expires at the end of 2027.
His recent work has focused on challenges facing international shipping, including the safety of seafarers and merchant vessels amid tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the industry's transition to cleaner fuels and technologies.
Responding to a question from Xinhua at a press conference on Monday, Dominguez highlighted China's investment in new technologies, alternative marine fuels and port infrastructure following his recent visit to the country.
He described efforts to convert waste in Shanghai into green methanol as "incredible," highlighting investments in ammonia and other hydrogen-derived fuels, as well as methanol and ethanol. ■
