PHNOM PENH, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's General Commissariat of National Police (GCNP), in collaboration with the Singapore Police Force, has successfully recovered 12.8 million U.S. dollars stolen in a business email compromise (BEC) scam, according to a GCNP press release issued Thursday evening.
The operation began on Monday after the Singapore Police Force received a report that a local petrochemical company had been defrauded into transferring the multi-million-dollar sum to a suspicious bank account in Cambodia. A preliminary investigation revealed that the attackers used email spoofing to deceive the company into authorizing the transfer.
Following the report, Singaporean authorities immediately requested assistance from Cambodia's GCNP to track the funds.
"Through this collaborative effort, the General Commissariat of National Police coordinated with the National Bank of Cambodia and other relevant institutions to successfully freeze the aforementioned funds and return them to the victim," the press release stated. ■
