SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's memory chip giant SK hynix smashed records in third-quarter revenue and operating profit amid an unprecedented global artificial intelligence (AI) boom, the company said Wednesday.
Its consolidated operating profit skyrocketed 632.1 percent from a year earlier to 83.33 trillion won (62.4 billion U.S. dollars) in the July-September quarter.
Revenue surged 327.9 percent to 104.62 trillion won, topping 100 trillion won for the first time in its history.
Both revenue and operating profit broke previous records for six consecutive quarters since the second quarter last year.
SK hynix forecast that the AI-led memory chip supply shortage would persist until 2030, explaining that the initial phase of AI investment, which heavily relied on a small number of tech giants, expanded to general enterprises and nation-level initiatives.
Affected by the blockbuster earnings, SK hynix announced a massive additional shareholder return plan. ■
