BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Sebastian Prieto struck a second-half winner as Argentinos Juniors secured a 1-0 home victory over Independiente Rivadavia in Argentina's Clausura tournament on Tuesday.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the 67th minute when Prieto's speculative 40-yard drive slipped through the gloves of Nicolas Bolcato before nestling into the far corner.
Rivadavia controlled possession for long periods and had several chances to equalize but couldn't find a way past goalkeeper Brayan Cortes.
"In this competition what matters most is consistency because in the end hard work is always rewarded," Argentinos Juniors manager Nicolas Diez told a post-match news conference.
"I'm proud of the players because they are showing character while maintaining high standards. The team fought when it had to but also wasn't afraid to go on the attack when the situation allowed."
Argentinos Juniors remains second in the 15-team Zone A standings with 28 points, behind leader Rosario Central on goal difference. Rivadavia is ninth, nine points off the pace. ■
