RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Jorge Carrascal converted a stoppage-time penalty as leader Flamengo clinched a 3-2 home win over Atletico Mineiro in Brazil's Serie A on Monday.
Former Everton winger Bernard opened the scoring for the visitors before goals from Gonzalo Plata and Giorgian de Arrascaeta gave Flamengo a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Renan Lodi restored parity but Colombian midfielder Carrascal broke the deadlock in the 99th minute after Leo Pereira was brought down by Lodi.
The result leaves Flamengo one point clear of second-placed Palmeiras with six matchdays remaining. Atletico is sixth in the 20-team standings, 20 points off the pace.
"The result suggests that we suffered tonight, but the truth is we were the far stronger team," Flamengo manager Leonardo Jardim told a post-match news conference.
"We let them hurt us on the counterattack, and we could have defended better to prevent their second goal. But we regained control of the game and deserved the victory in the end."
In Monday's only other match, a late strike from Martin Braithwaite handed Gremio a 1-0 win at Coritiba. ■
