BUDAPEST, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Gyorgy Matolcsy, former governor of the National Bank of Hungary (MNB), has been taken into custody on suspicion of financial fraud and the use of forged documents, Hungarian news agency MTI reported Wednesday.
Matolcsy has been questioned at the Central Chief Prosecution Office (KNYF) of Investigation, his lawyer Pal Batki told MTI. The prosecutor's office said earlier Wednesday that coordinated investigative action was under way at multiple locations in connection with an investigation into the MNB's foundations and the renovation of its landmark headquarters.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar also confirmed Matolcsy's detention in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
Matolcsy served as the MNB governor from 2013 to 2025 and as economy minister under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban from 2010 to 2013. ■
