BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan, saying they had unscrupulously distorted history and hyped separatist rhetoric based on a warped version of history.
Such rhetoric on history revealed the DPP authorities' true intention of inciting cross-Strait confrontation, said Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, when responding to a media question on Taiwan authorities' and Lai Ching-te's remarks regarding the history of World War II.
It also showed the DPP authorities' ignorance of history and betrayal of the ancestors, Chen said.
The Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was the first to break out and lasted the longest in the World Anti-Fascist War, or World War II, resulting in over 35 million Chinese military and civilian casualties from 1931 to 1945.
The victory of the war and the recovery of Taiwan from Japanese occupation are great victories achieved by the Chinese people, including those in Taiwan, at the cost of blood and lives, Chen noted.
Taiwan's liberation from the shackles of Japan's colonial rule and its return to the motherland represent an important outcome of the Chinese people's victory in fighting Japanese aggressors, and form an integral part of the post-World War II international order, Chen said.
It's a historical memory the Chinese people across the Taiwan Strait should never forget, said Chen, urging compatriots in Taiwan to see the true face of the DPP authorities and stand on the right side of history.
Following the Chinese people's victory in the war of resistance against Japanese aggressors, a full-blown civil war broke out between the forces led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT). In 1949, the remnants of the defeated KMT retreated to Taiwan, and the People's Republic of China was founded under the leadership of the CPC.
This unresolved civil war and foreign interference have left the two sides of the Strait in a prolonged state of political confrontation, but the fact that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory has never changed.
The real status quo across the Taiwan Strait is that there is only one China in the world and that Taiwan is a part of China, Chen said.
By promoting a false narrative of "democracy versus authoritarianism," stoking cross-Strait confrontation, or attempting to pursue "Taiwan independence" through military means and by relying on foreign forces, the DPP authorities will only gradually drag Taiwan into a dangerous situation and bring great disaster to the people in Taiwan, Chen noted. ■
