KABUL, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Police have rescued three teenagers and detained an individual who was attempting to traffic them out of the country in northern Afghanistan's Samangan province on Sunday, the provincial police office said in a statement on Monday.

The victims, aged between 12 and 14, were deceived by the alleged trafficker, who promised to take them to Iran to work, the statement said, adding that police had handed the children over to their families.

The alleged trafficker is under investigation, the statement added.

Many Afghans leave their war-torn country for abroad, mostly for neighboring nations, in search of work to escape poverty and unemployment at home.

Afghan security forces have arrested dozens of individuals on charges of human trafficking and rescued hundreds of victims in the western province of Nimroz, which borders Iran, over the past couple of months. ■
