ISLAMABAD, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and over 30 others injured when a truck collided with a passenger van in Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province on Sunday, police said.

The accident occurred in the Mach area where the truck reportedly suffered brake failure and went out of control, colliding with the van, police told the media.

Both vehicles plunged into a ravine, leaving the passengers dead and injured, the police added.

Rescue teams launched operations following the accident to retrieve the victims and shift the injured to nearby medical facilities.

Police said that further investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.

Road accidents in Pakistan have become an alarming issue, with a significant increase in both frequency and severity over the years. According to traffic police officials, reckless driving, poor road conditions, and inadequate vehicle maintenance are among the primary causes of the high accident rate. ■
