COLOMBO, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Seven people were injured after a gas cylinder exploded at a kidney hospital in Polonnaruwa in north-central Sri Lanka early Saturday, police said.
The explosion occurred at around 4 a.m. in the kitchen of the hospital, officially known as the Polonnaruwa Nephrology Hospital.
The injured were members of the kitchen staff and were admitted to Polonnaruwa Hospital for treatment. Three of them were in serious condition, according to hospital sources.
The blast also caused extensive damage to the hospital building.
No patients receiving treatment at the kidney hospital or other health workers were injured.
Hospital staff evacuated patients from the building following the explosion and made arrangements to provide necessary treatment and transfer those requiring further care to Polonnaruwa General Hospital. ■
