JERUSALEM, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said late Tuesday that the commander of Hamas' Rafah Brigade had been killed in an Israeli strike in the southern Gaza Strip.
Earlier in the day, Israel's military and Shin Bet domestic security agency said they had carried out a strike targeting "a senior" Hamas figure in the southern Gaza Strip.
In a later joint statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Katz said the strike followed the killing earlier this week of Hamas' Khan Younis Brigade commander and other senior figures, adding that no militant is "immune, and Hamas will not remain in Gaza."
Meanwhile, Palestinian medical sources said at least two Palestinians, including a child, were killed and several others injured Tuesday evening in the Israeli airstrike.
Palestinian medical sources told Xinhua that the bodies of two people, including a child, and a number of injured Palestinians, including women and children in critical condition, were brought to Nasser hospital in Khan Younis.
Local sources and eyewitnesses said an Israeli aircraft fired three missiles at tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in al-Sumoud camp in the al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, setting the tents on fire.
Israeli strikes in Gaza have continued despite a ceasefire that took effect in October 2025. ■
