JERUSALEM/GAZA, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Israel's military and Shin Bet domestic security agency said on Tuesday that they had carried out a strike targeting "a senior" Hamas figure in the southern Gaza Strip.

In a later joint statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said the target was the commander of Hamas' Rafah Brigade.

They said the strike followed the killing earlier this week of Hamas' Khan Younis Brigade commander and other senior figures, adding that no militant is "immune, and Hamas will not remain in Gaza."

Israeli media reported that Israel's security officials are increasingly confident that Rafah Brigade Commander Naiel Abu Abeid has been killed.

Meanwhile, Palestinian medical sources said at least two Palestinians, including a child, were killed and several others injured Tuesday evening in the Israeli airstrike.

Palestinian medical sources told Xinhua that the bodies of two people, including a child, and a number of injured Palestinians, including women and children in critical condition, were brought to Nasser hospital in Khan Younis.

Local sources and eyewitnesses said an Israeli aircraft fired three missiles at tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in al-Sumoud camp in the al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, setting the tents on fire.

Israeli strikes in Gaza have continued despite a ceasefire that took effect in October 2025.
