MACAO, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Chen Yi and Chen Xingtong advanced to the women's quarterfinals at WTT Champions Macao 2026 on Friday, while their compatriot Zhou Qihao also booked his place in the men's last eight.
Chen Yi overcame Russia's Elizabet Abraamian 11-9, 8-11, 13-11, 12-10 in a closely contested match.
"I made a thorough study of her before the match and knew that she is very strong with her backhand attacks. She had also beaten me in a previous match," Chen said.
"Every game today was very close, and I also made some mistakes. When it came to the crucial points, I tried to keep calm and reduce unforced errors."
Chen Xingtong also advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Hana Goda of Egypt 3-2.
Elsewhere in the women's singles, Japan's Satsuki Odo edged Chinese Taipei's Cheng I-Ching 3-2, Japan's Hina Hayata beat compatriot Honoka Hashimoto 3-2, Germany's Han Ying came from behind to defeat Poland's Natalia Bajor 3-2, while Egypt's Dina Meshref swept American Lily Zhang 3-0.
On the men's side, Zhou survived another tough battle, defeating American Kanak Jha 12-10, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8 to reach the last eight. He will face Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto in the quarterfinals.
Zhou said he had expected a difficult match before stepping onto the court.
"I was prepared for a tough match before the game. I led 7-3 in the second game, but my opponent played several very good points, and I failed to settle into my rhythm, allowing him to come back," Zhou said.
"After the first two games, both of us became more familiar with each other's playing style. In the last two games, I made adjustments in terms of spin, placement and rhythm, which disrupted his attacking rhythm."
For fellow Chinese player Chen Yuanyu, the tournament ended in the Round of 16 after a hard-fought 3-2 defeat to Slovenia's Darko Jorgic.
Also on Friday, Japan's Sora Matsushima overcame Wong Chun Ting of Hong Kong, China, 3-1. France's Alexis Lebrun outlasted Germany's Benedikt Duda 3-2, while Sweden's Truls Moregardh defeated Japan's Shunsuke Togami 3-1.
The WTT Champions Macao will conclude on Sunday, with the semifinals and finals scheduled for the final day. ■
