BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Midfielder Tomas Galvan scored twice as River Plate secured a 3-1 home win over Independiente Rivadavia in Argentina's Clausura tournament on Sunday.
Gonzalo Montiel put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot and Galvan doubled the advantage with a clinical finish past Nicolas Bolcato.
Alex Arce pulled a goal back by nodding in after Jose Florentin's headed flick, but Galvan restored his team's lead when he rifled a long-range effort into the top-right corner 10 minutes from time.
River is now ninth in the 15-team Zone B standings with 10 points, six behind leader Argentinos Juniors. Independiente Rivadavia is eighth with 11 points.
"We played a great match from start to finish," Galvan said afterwards. "We had to ride out the final stages when they were putting in a lot of dangerous crosses. They are a tough team but we were up to the challenge."
In other games on Sunday, Atletico Tucuman won 2-1 at Racing, Lanus secured a 1-0 home win over Defensa y Justicia, Independiente won 1-0 at Central Cordoba, and Newell's Old Boys drew 1-1 at Rosario Central. ■
