SYDNEY, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed after a light plane crashed south of Brisbane in eastern Australia on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to the crash involving a Beechcraft A36 Bonanza aircraft about 30 km south of central Brisbane shortly after 11 a.m. local time on Monday.

Authorities said on Monday afternoon that two people were killed in the crash, which ignited a grass fire that took crews an hour to contain.

Police Chief Superintendent Mel Adams told reporters that the scene was confronting for first responders and asked for anyone who witnessed the aircraft hitting the ground to contact investigators immediately.

Local media reported that the aircraft had taken off from a nearby airport around 10 minutes before crashing.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it has deployed a team of three investigators to examine the wreckage, recover components and interview witnesses and involved parties.
