WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- U.S. forces on Tuesday launched fresh strikes on targets of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Iran, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

"Today at 12 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran," the CENTCOM said on X.

The development marked a new escalation following a fresh exchange of attacks between Washington and Tehran on Sunday, the first known conflict between both sides since late July.

Explosions were heard Tuesday in the Iranian port cities of Bandar Abbas and Sirik, and on Qeshm Island, reports reaching here said.

Citing sources, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that Iranian military on Tuesday evening launched missiles toward U.S. bases in regional countries.

The CENTCOM said Tuesday's strikes followed recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against U.S. service members deployed in the region.

Iran fired at least eight ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in Jordan on Sunday, following a U.S. airstrike on IRGC launchers on Larak Island, Fox News reported, citing a U.S. source.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday vowed retaliation against Iran, while leaving open the chance of renewed peace talks between the two sides.
