SHENZHEN, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- The China-Indonesia Friendship Stories Exchange Event on the "Blue Miracles of Maritime Cooperation" was held Tuesday in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province.
Guests from relevant institutions, universities, think tanks and enterprises of both China and Indonesia attended the event, sharing the fruitful outcomes of bilateral maritime cooperation.
At the event, participants shared firsthand experiences on topics including marine surveys and disaster prevention and mitigation, marine resource development, marine ecological protection, fishery and industrial standard alignment, and marine education and talent cultivation.
Li Shujiang, a senior engineer at the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, reviewed the 20-year journey of joint China-Indonesia marine surveys.
Li noted that since the launch of the "SITE Program" in 2006, the two sides have conducted 19 joint survey voyages in waters including the Karimata Strait, jointly monitoring key data such as the Indonesian Throughflow, providing scientific support for addressing global climate change. The cooperation model has expanded from individual projects to a long-term strategic partnership.
Faisal Hamzah, a researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia, pointed out that Indonesia boasts vast marine resources while China possesses advanced marine technologies, and that the two sides are joining hands to explore feasible solutions for sustainable marine development and utilization.
Deng Aifang, an assistant researcher at the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, said Indonesia's mangrove forests account for 23 percent of the global total, making their protection especially important.
In 2024, under the framework of the "Indonesia-China Center for Ocean and Climate," the two countries carried out field research in Cilacap, Indonesia, compiled a manual on mangrove protection and restoration, and brought mangrove science popularization to local schools, according to Deng. ■
