CARACAS, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Maiquetia International Airport, Venezuela's main airport serving Caracas, formally resumed commercial operations Tuesday at temporary terminals built after its original infrastructure was damaged by the June 24 earthquakes.
Located about 20 km from the Venezuelan capital, the airport is in La Guaira state, the area hardest hit by the twin earthquakes that killed more than 6,000 people.
Operations resumed with a Conviasa flight to the Andean city of Valera. Flights to other domestic destinations, including Porlamar on Margarita Island and San Antonio del Tachira near the Colombian border, were also scheduled for the day.
International flights were also expected to operate to Miami with Global X, Panama with Copa Airlines and Madrid with Air Europa.
Authorities had previously said Maiquetia's temporary terminals were expected to handle up to 80 percent of pre-quake demand by December.
The international airports in Valencia, in central Venezuela, and Barcelona, in the country's northeast, had served as alternative hubs for air connectivity and are expected to continue handling more flights than usual. ■
