NAIROBI, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Miriam Achieng Kenyatta, a 23-year-old geospatial engineering student at the University of Nairobi, received a warm reception upon returning home after making history at the 25th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students.
Raised in Nairobi's Kibera informal settlement, Achieng's life trajectory was transformed by a childhood curiosity sparked by a television movie. Her passion culminated in the highest-ever ranking by a Kenyan in the prestigious global contest, where she placed among the Top 15 worldwide.
"When my teacher first asked me why I hadn't applied for the competition, I told her it wasn't that I didn't want to, but that I didn't dare to because I felt I wouldn't make it," Achieng recalled upon her arrival.
Speaking to Xinhua on Thursday, Achieng explained that the rigorous competition began with preliminary tests evaluating listening, speaking, and writing skills to narrow the global field down to just 30 contestants. She attributed her unprecedented success to two months of intensive language training following her victory at the Kenya national finals earlier this year.
Wang Shangxue, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, praised Achieng's achievement, noting that Kenyan students face distinct structural hurdles compared to international peers who major solely in foreign languages.
"In Kenya, students take language classes only two or three times a week," Wang explained.
Wang added that while Kenyan national champions historically ranked between 70th and 90th globally, the country's performance has surged rapidly-building on a breakthrough Top-30 finish last year to reach the Top 15 this year.
"This year, Achieng reaching the Top 15 is unprecedented for Kenya," Wang noted. "It shows that through intensive training and extra dedication, our students can excel at the highest level."
For Achieng's family, the achievement brings immense pride following a period of deep financial hardship. Last year, health challenges faced by her father, a local tailor, forced the family to relocate to rural Kisumu County.
Her mother, 46-year-old Hellen Juma Bonyo, expressed deep emotion over her daughter's global recognition. Providing for four children on an unpredictable income remains a continuous struggle for Bonyo, making her daughter's international success a testament to resilience and hard work-a milestone she hopes will inspire both her other children and youth nationwide. ■
