SINGAPORE, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- National University of Singapore and Switzerland-based semiconductor firm STMicroelectronics have launched a four-year research lab to develop next-generation edge artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
The lab will "enable new generative and embodied AI use cases at the edge through system-to-silicon innovation," the university said in a statement on Monday.
Edge AI processes data directly within or close to a device rather than relying exclusively on remote cloud infrastructure, it said, adding that this enables faster response times, stronger data privacy, improved energy efficiency, and greater resilience in environments with limited or intermittent connectivity.
Embodied AI, where intelligence is built directly into a physical form, such as a robot, humanoid, or drone, is a key frontier within this space, it noted.
"Delivering that intelligence efficiently, on compact and power-constrained hardware" is the challenge the lab is built to address.
The lab brings together a multidisciplinary research ecosystem spanning AI algorithms, accelerator architectures, low-power memory systems, circuit design, silicon technologies, and application development. ■
