5.0-magnitude earthquake hits Granada, surrounding areas in southern Spain

MADRID, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 struck the city of Granada and nearby areas in Spain's southern autonomous community of Andalusia at 1:04 a.m. local time on Saturday, according to Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN).

The epicenter, 5.5 km northeast of Alhendin in Granada province, was located at 37.1187 degrees north latitude and 3.6344 degrees west longitude, IGN data showed.

The quake damaged homes and other buildings, but no casualties were reported, according to the Andalusian regional government. The regional government activated its Seismic Risk Emergency Plan. A series of aftershocks was recorded in the area.

Spain's last earthquake causing serious damage struck the areas near Lorca in the neighboring region of Murcia in May 2011. The quake with a magnitude of 5.1 killed nine people and injured more than 300 others.
