CANBERRA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Authorities on Monday rescued three people who drove into floodwaters in South Australia (SA) amid heavy rainfall across the state.
SA Police said that emergency services were called to reports that a vehicle had driven into a flooded area in the suburb of Hillier, 35 km north of central Adelaide, around 4:50 a.m. local time on Monday.
Two occupants, a man and a woman, managed to escape the vehicle through windows. While police were helping them to safety, a second vehicle drove into the water and also became stuck.
The male driver exited the vehicle and was helped to safety.
Senior Constable Daniel Isaacson told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio that there were no injuries, but both vehicles were washed away, likely into a nearby river.
The SA State Emergency Service said it received more than 500 calls for assistance over the weekend, mostly related to flooding in the northern suburbs of Adelaide, amid heavy rainfall and storm activity. ■
