ISLAMABAD, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to protecting the rights, cultures and traditions of indigenous peoples, stressing the importance of preserving their knowledge and ensuring equal opportunities.
In a message marking the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, Zardari said indigenous knowledge had helped preserve cultural traditions and knowledge of nature, health and the environment, adding that Pakistan's diverse communities had enriched the country's national heritage for centuries.
Referring to this year's theme, "Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being," the president highlighted the role of indigenous midwives in preserving traditional knowledge and supporting mothers, newborns and families, particularly in remote areas where access to healthcare can be difficult.
Zardari said Pakistan's Constitution guaranteed equality before the law and equal protection, while recognizing the right of citizens with a distinct language, script or culture to preserve and promote it.
The president reaffirmed Pakistan's support for efforts to ensure indigenous peoples' knowledge is respected, their voices heard and their communities accessible to opportunities and services needed to live with dignity and security. ■
