UNITED NATIONS, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China welcomes the UN General Assembly's decision to technically roll over intergovernmental negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform to its next session, a Chinese envoy said Tuesday, calling the IGN "the only legitimate platform" for discussing the reform.
"Security Council reform concerns the major interests of all member states," said Sun Lei, the charge d'affaires of China's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, after the General Assembly adopted an oral decision on the rollover of the IGN.
"China hopes that all parties will maintain a strategic vision and a long-term perspective, jointly uphold the IGN as the primary channel for negotiations, adhere to the principle of consensus among member states, and continue in-depth communication and consensus-building within the IGN to ensure that the reform process moves in the only correct direction of enhancing the representation and voice of developing countries and continues to make steady and sustained progress," Sun said.
He added that China stands ready to work with all parties to continue advancing Security Council reform in a direction that serves the common interests of member states and the sound development of the United Nations, and to make positive contributions to building a more just and equitable global governance system. ■
