YANGON, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar held a ceremony to mark the 2026 International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday, the state-owned daily The Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Saturday.
During the ceremony, Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation Thaung Naing Oo said mangrove forests are important carbon sinks that absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and play a vital role in disaster risk reduction and climate change mitigation.
Myanmar has the world's seventh-largest mangrove forest area, covering about 1.26 million acres, and ranks third among ASEAN countries in terms of mangrove coverage, he said.
A discussion on mangrove plantation development and conservation efforts was held. ■
