SYDNEY, July 24 (Xinhua) -- One worker has died and another has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a vehicle was crushed by a truck at a coal mine in the Australian state of Queensland on Friday.
Emergency services were deployed to the Peak Downs open-pit coal mine, 760 km northwest of Brisbane, around 5 a.m. local time on Friday following reports that a large truck had reversed over a light vehicle with two workers inside.
One man was trapped inside the light vehicle and died at the scene while the other was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.
The Peak Downs mine is owned and operated by BMA, a 50-50 joint venture between BHP and Mitsubishi Development.
Claire Cooper, chief executive of Resources Health and Safety Queensland, said that investigators and coal inspectors had been deployed to the site.
Police have commenced an investigation. ■
