DHAKA, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's border security force on Thursday seized 110,000 illicit tablets in the country's southeastern Cox's Bazar district.
Acting on a tip-off, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said in a statement that a patrol team of the paramilitary force seized the yaba tablets, a highly addictive methamphetamine-based drug.
Two persons suspected of being linked to the seizure were arrested in the district, it said.
According to the statement, the pills, worth about 33 million taka (about 270,491 U.S. dollars), were hidden in a Bangladesh-bound boat on the Naf River, which separates southeastern Bangladesh from northwestern Myanmar.
The tablets have been increasingly popular among drug users, despite the efforts of law enforcement agencies to curb the dangers of the narcotics trade.
Official sources said the drug is also smuggled into Bangladesh by air and land from some other countries in the region, including Nepal and Thailand. ■
