SUVA, July 22 (Xinhua) -- The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is warning businesses against engaging in "greenwashing" by making false, exaggerated, or misleading environmental claims to attract consumers.
Such conduct has the potential to mislead consumers and may contravene the fair trading provisions of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission Act, the FCCC said in a statement on Wednesday.
FCCC Chief Executive Officer Senikavika Jiuta said environmental responsibility is increasingly influencing consumer purchasing decisions, making it essential that businesses communicate honestly and transparently.
Businesses should never exploit consumers' genuine concern for the environment through misleading claims, Jiuta added.
The commission encourages businesses to review all environmental and sustainability claims to ensure they are accurate, specific, and supported by credible evidence, while clearly disclosing any conditions, limitations, or qualifications. ■
