KHARTOUM, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced Wednesday that it has recaptured the strategic town of Kurmuk in southeastern Sudan's Blue Nile State from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) following fierce battles.

The SAF said in a statement that its forces, with allied support, inflicted casualties and equipment losses on the RSF, seizing weapons and vehicles.

It added that the next phase would focus on protecting civilians and restoring basic services.

The RSF has not yet commented on the announcement.

Kurmuk is a key town on Sudan's border with Ethiopia. It serves as a vital trade corridor and defensive buffer. It guards the approaches to the vital Al-Roseires Dam. The RSF took control of the town on March 24.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in conflict between the SAF and the RSF, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.
