LHASA, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The first plateau brain-computer interface (BCI) clinical application center in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region was officially inaugurated at Lhasa People's Hospital on Thursday, marking a significant step for the region in leveraging cutting-edge technology to address intractable neurological diseases.

Based on Xizang's first standardized BCI consultation and evaluation outpatient clinic, the new center pools the hospital's multi-disciplinary resources from departments including neurosurgery, neurology, rehabilitation medicine and medical imaging.

Adopting BCI technology, the center provides full-process precise diagnosis and treatment services covering screening and assessment, personalized treatment scheme formulation, and post-operative rehabilitation for patients suffering from cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral ischemia, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and peripheral nerve injury.

"The launch of the plateau BCI clinical application center will significantly improve the hospital's capacity to receive patients with neurological rehabilitation needs, and promote the implementation of cutting-edge medical technologies to benefit people in Xizang," said Bai Youqing, vice president of Lhasa People's Hospital.

As a transformative human-computer interaction solution, BCI technology has shown great potential in the neurological rehabilitation field. Hemiplegic patients after stroke are likely to restore limb functions with the assistance of BCI-powered exoskeletons, and even complete complex movements including shaking hands and walking.
