ADDIS ABABA, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Tuesday that more than 5.5 million jobs were created over the past year as part of multifaceted efforts to address unemployment.
Abiy made the remarks while presenting his government's performance report to the House of Peoples' Representatives (HoPR), the lower house of the East African country's parliament.
He noted that some 4.9 million Ethiopians have secured domestic employment, while more than 600,000 citizens have benefited from various types of overseas employment opportunities during the concluded 2025/26 fiscal year, which ended on July 7.
Abiy said the agriculture sector accounted for the largest share of employment, providing jobs for more than two million citizens, followed by the service sector, which generated some 1.8 million jobs, while the industry sector employed more than 900,000 people during the fiscal year.
Job creation grew by 13 percent domestically and 27 percent abroad during the reported period compared to the previous year, according to the prime minister.
Highlighting that various initiatives have enabled the creation of this record number of jobs over the past year, Abiy said that some 40,000 young Ethiopians have benefited from a state-led digitization initiative, equipping them with the necessary digital skills to secure remote work.
Meanwhile, the prime minister, in his address to the HoPR, touched upon developments across a wide range of topics, including the country's peace and security situation, as well as recent socio-economic and political progress. ■
