KABUL, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Authorities have inaugurated the first-ever sports gymnasium in Kunduz province, northern Afghanistan, on Tuesday, director of provincial Olympic Directorate Mohammad Qayum Rahimi said Wednesday.
Constructed at 50 million afghani (around 770,0000 U.S. dollars), the gymnasium has a capacity of 500 onlookers, and is expected to boost a variety of sports, including volleyball, football, and martial arts in the province, the official noted, adding that the provincial Olympic directorate would build more facilities to promote sports.
Afghanistan's major sports stadium is located in the national capital Kabul. However, the olympic directorate of the country has promised to construct gymnasiums in each province to support athletes and sports. ■
