HARARE, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday signed into law the Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3, which extends the presidential term from five to seven years, moving the end of his current tenure to 2030.
Nick Mangwana, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, confirmed the development on the social media platform X.
The legislation had passed through both houses of Zimbabwe's Parliament, with the National Assembly approving the final amendments last week. Following the president's assent, the Constitutional Amendment Act has now been officially gazetted.
The act introduces several key changes, including extending the tenure of the president, parliament, and local authorities from five to seven years. It also replaces the direct election of the president by citizens with an election through parliament. ■
