COLOMBO, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has introduced amendments to regulations governing color-code labeling for sugar-containing liquid food products, setting out updated requirements for the design and display of red, amber and green sugar-level logos on product packaging, local media reported Friday.
The amendments were issued under the signature of Minister of Health and Mass Media, Nalinda Jayatissa, in consultation with the Food Advisory Committee. They were published in an Extraordinary Gazette dated June 23.
Under the amended regulations, the sugar content per 100 milliliters represented by the red color has been reduced from 11 grams to 8 grams. Liquid food products containing 2.5 grams to 8 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters must carry an amber label, while those containing less than 2.5 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters should display a green label.
The regulations also introduce an alternative logo for use on glass bottles where space constraints limit the total printable area available for labeling. ■
