BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Thursday called on Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to abandon the secessionist statements in its party platform document and recognize the 1992 Consensus if it truly believes there is no issue of "Taiwan independence" in current cross-Strait relations.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks at a regular press conference in response to recent comments from Taiwan's mainland affairs department.

"If the DPP truly believes there is no 'Taiwan independence' issue, then it should immediately abolish the statements seeking 'Taiwan independence' contained in its party platform, cease secessionist activities, acknowledge the 1992 Consensus that embodies the one-China principle, and take concrete actions to improve cross-Strait relations," Zhu said.

She said the statements seeking "Taiwan independence" in the DPP party platform demonstrate its long-standing attempt to split Taiwan from China.

Since taking office, the DPP authorities have actively sought support from external forces to pursue a secessionist agenda, seriously undermining cross-Strait relations, threatening peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and harming the safety and well-being of Taiwan residents, Zhu noted.

"The future of Taiwan, as well as the security, interests and well-being of Taiwan compatriots, are always tied to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and national reunification," Zhu said.

She added that the mainland is willing to strengthen exchanges and communication with political parties, organizations and people from various sectors in Taiwan on the common political foundation of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence."
