JAKARTA, June 30 (Xinhua) -- A fire broke out at a landfill in Tangerang regency, near the Indonesian capital city of Jakarta, on Tuesday, scorching more than two hectares of land, local officials said.
Driven by continuous dry weather and baking temperatures, the blaze spread rapidly across the waste disposal site after being detected on Tuesday morning, local media reported.
Strong winds and a shortage of water supplies also severely hampered firefighting efforts, the report said.
A joint emergency team involving dozens of personnel and fire engines was deployed to contain the blaze. Local medical teams were also on standby to treat people affected by the thick smoke. ■
