JAKARTA, June 30 (Xinhua) -- An Indonesian court on Tuesday sentenced Nadiem Anwar Makarim, a former education minister, to 10 years in prison.

Makarim was ordered to pay 1 billion rupiah (55,818 U.S. dollars) in fines and to return over 800 billion rupiah (45 million dollars) in restitution.

Failing to return the money would add another five years to his prison sentence, the judges said.

Makarim left Gojek, a popular ride-hailing and digital payment giant in Indonesia, in 2019 to join the previous government, and served as education minister until 2024.

Prosecutors accused Makarim of profiting from the procurement deal by favoring Google, a major investor in Gojek, resulting in state losses.
